We’re not asking Apple to make iMessage available on Android. Apple often touts its control over iOS as a selling point for consumers, and shifting away from iMessage could jeopardize that. But the question is whether doing so is in the company's interest. But it still doesn't fix the issue highlighted by the Journal of improving compatibility between the iPhone and Android phones.Īs one of the biggest players in the mobile phone industry, Apple could undoubtedly be doing more to help establish a more consistent texting experience across devices. The standard is a step forward in making messaging more uniform across the wide variety of Android devices that exist. Other features that are already in iMessage, such as group chat encryption and cross-platform message reactions, are still in development for RCS and Google's Messages app. RCS is packed with iMessage-like features such as typing indicators and read receipts, but has had a prolonged rollout as US phone carriers each separately announced plans to make RCS the default option on most Android phones. While RCS itself is an open standard, Google has been championing it the most in recent years after the company's long history of launching proprietary texting apps that did not gain the notoriety of iMessage or Meta's WhatsApp.
